Angela Bonham, LMSW

Telehealth

I'm a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and educator who uses a humanistic, strength-based approach to support clients through challenging life transitions and mental health concerns. I honor the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — and welcome clients who draw meaning from earth-based spiritualities, nature-centered practices, or non-traditional spiritual paths. I bring experience from crisis settings, behavioral health, and higher education, and I bring my full self into every session.

Life doesn't always go according to plan. Sometimes the transitions are chosen — a career change, a move, a relationship shift. Sometimes they're not. Either way, navigating them takes more than grit. It takes support from someone who sees your strengths even when you've lost sight of them.

I work from a warm, humanistic framework. That means I believe in your capacity to grow and change, and I meet you where you are — not where you think you should be. We build on what's already working in your life while addressing what's not.

I also welcome the spiritual dimension of healing. Many of my clients find meaning through earth-based spiritualities, seasonal rhythms, nature-centered practices, or spiritual traditions outside the mainstream. If that's part of how you make sense of the world, it has a place in our work together.

I also supervise LLMSW therapists working toward full licensure. If you're a new clinician looking for supervision that's supportive, rigorous, and grounded in real clinical experience — including crisis work and behavioral health — I'd be glad to talk with you about working together.

As a middle school teacher for 25 years, and now an elementary school social worker, I have a wealth of experience with meeting children and teenagers where they are while also supporting their growth and development. My approach to this process begins with non-judgmental, compassionate, and curious questions to get to know each child and family. As we move towards exploring solutions together, I like to use the strengths that already exist in each family to guide us. My focus is supporting children and adolescents (and their families) who are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, any neurodiversity, gender and sexual identity exploration, and general life stresses.

I believe that young children make sense of their world, and share that knowledge with adults, through play, so I incorporate art, legos, social stories, and games into our sessions. (I am also well versed in Minecraft and happy to discuss it at length!) With older children and teenagers I incorporate Motivational Interviewing, CBT, ACT, and Exposure Therapy for OCD, always matching the intervention with client needs and preferences. I have had training in TF-CBT (treating trauma in children) and bring a mind-body connection and mindfulness perspective to my work with children and adolescents. I believe that children and adolescents, like adults, are their own experts on themselves, and as such, their identities should be valued and supported as they explore their developing self.

I hold both a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and a Master degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University, as well as a Master degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my children doing art projects, exploring parks, building with legos, playing video games, camping, and swimming.

Have you ever been told that you overthink things? Or that you intellectualize too much? Instead of seeing these as barriers, I create space for engaging these strengths and leveraging them towards what you value. I have central commitments to neurodiverse and LGBTQIA2S+ communities. I specialize with intersections of queer and neurodiverse (autistic, ADHD, etc.) identities. I also enjoy working with individuals on stress related to higher education (such as college or graduate school). Other areas of work include: depression, anxiety, and religious trauma.

In addition to a Masters of Social Work, I have a PhD in Philosophy with a focus on gender, queer theory, and trans theory. This means that I have a lot of conceptual tools at your disposal for engaging questions of identity, intersectionality, and how to negotiate conflicting social expectations and demands.

My goal is to be a resource for you, to help you celebrate the strengths and tools already within you, and to form a collaborative relationship to build upon them with you. I want to learn your voice, your language, and help you amplify it. Who am I outside of the office? Areas of fun: board games, crosswords, crochet.
